In case you haven't heard! We got approval from all necessary parties (Nhfc, host country and internat) to rehost "M" this summer! We are so excited and as time gets closer to her arrival we are getting even more anxious to see our girl again!

I've updated friends and family in person and via Facebook and Instagram but I've been slacking in my blog updates on the matter. I wanted to update everyone on the exciting news as well as share about the successful fundraisers we have had so far and the ones that we have coming up!

Thankfully, having hosted "M" before, we have a much better idea of what were headed into as far as what she "needs" while she's here. Since I knew there was a chance she would be back I saved all of her clothes from last summer that she wasn't able to fit in her suitcase to bring back. I am so excited to break out those bags and transform our craft/play room, that we still reference to as "M's" room back into in fact just that... "M's" room. I am forcing myself to wait until after school is out and for now just focus on raising the hosting fees we need to simply bring her here.. first things first right?

Hosting fees are roughly $3,250. We've done two fundraisers so far.. The first one we "egged" over 20 houses the few nights before Easter! It was so much fun and I was overwhelmed with the amount of help that I had for that fundraiser!

Next the Terry's so graciously did a Chicken Alfredo take out dinner for us! We sold 105 take out dinners and the night could not have gone better! Again I was completely humbled by those who so willingly helped us in our efforts to bring "M" back this summer!

With those two fundraisers we've raised almost exactly HALF of our hosting fees! The next fundraiser I will be doing is a day of mini photo shoots! Click here for more information on that!

Others have said they would rather just donate to our host fees.. so for those of you that would like to do that the best way to do it is directly to New Horizons for Children. Follow the instructions below to ensure your tax deductible donation gets applied specifically to "M".

Thank you all so much for your continued love and support on our journey of loving "M". This morning Brian and I completed our "rehost" training. We were reminded that even if the first hosting period went flawlessly that doesn't necessarily mean the second will be the same. We were reminded of the affects that trauma as a child can have on the brain and how often times those wounds will be evident through their actions even many years later. Most of all we were encouraged with the reminder that we have the ability to show "M" the unconditional love of a family and try our best to be God's hands and feet in her life so that she will leave here knowing there is a God who loves her even more than we do! Please pray for us as we continue to prepare our home, our hearts and our finances for this summer's adventure with "M" (part two!).

Instructions on donating directly to NHFC on behalf of "M"

use THIS LINK and choose donate to a specific child. Notes will indicate this is a donation for A SPECIFIC CHILD!! When given the chance enter "E1076 - Gudgel family" in the notes so they know who to apply it towards. Thank you so much!

So M has been gone for about a week now and we've been left to process our time with her. Over all we had a wonderful hosting experience. This is not always the case for all families. All of these kids have gone through tough times as children and a lot of times their behavior stems from those tough times. M didn't show many of the issues we were warned about and trained on. We are so thankful. She was a very typical teenager in our eyes. Not perfect, a lot of sass, but also had the capability of connecting and loving. We know if we end up hosting her again we may have a totally different experience since she would be a bit more comfortable, but bottom line, we were so surprised at how well adjusted she seemed to be.

We had A TON of support through this journey. The prayers, hugs, texts, calls, emails, gifts we got from our friends, family and even acquaintances was a HUGE encouragement for us. It was so awesome to have you all along this journey with us.

In addition to people we also had some wonderful organizations and companies help us make this time in America special for M. Dr Goodin and his wonderful staff, Dr Lee and his wonderful staff, The San Jose Earthquakes, Stitchfix, Wild Water Adventure park in Clovis, Christina's Fine Clothing and probably others we can't even think of at the moment... but one we really want to recognize is a wonderful organization called Father to the Fatherless. They helped us with a large portion of our hosting fees and they have also helped Todd and Amy a number of ways to help with their adoption. In addition the founders of the organization are good friends of Todd and Amy who have also adopted from Eastern Europe. They want to help other families be able to host and adopt. They are a newer organization so please help get the word out and if you would like more information you can visit their website at www.give2orphans.org/

We are so thankful for the internet and the ability to communicate with our sweet M while she is across the world. We do a lot of messaging on social media and have even used skype for a phone call. This girl has forever changed our lives for the better. Hosting was one of the best decisions we made as a family. If you would like more information on hosting you can visit www.nhfc.org. The next hosting is over Christmas break!

There are still quite a few things we need (and want) so i've made a list below in case any one wants to help us! I will update this list by crossing off what comes in so you all can see what's been claimed. Just so you know, her favorite color is pink!

When God put it on our hearts to host it was a month before the money would need to be turned in and although I was dreading that part, He provided! We raised the money needed to cover her hosting fees. Each time I saw a pay pal email, fb message, Someone giving me a check or cash at church, or new horizons account statement update, I was humbled by the generosity of the people in our circle! I can not wait to show "M" her puzzle and explain that all the people whose names are on the back are people who made it possible for her to come here this summer!

God continues to show me he knew this was a good summer for us to host- I was disappointed that our family vacations (that we planned and paid for back in January) were taking place before "M" arrives on June 29. I wanted her to be able to go camping and to Montana with us but God knew better than me. We've never had trips this close together before but it just happened that way this summer. In a Facebook group I'm a part of with other people that are hosting this summer someone shared that one thing we need to be intentional about before our host child gets here is filling our bio kids love tanks and making sure we are being intentional about spending time with our spouses so that we can go into hosting as relationally healthy as possible. After spending the past 5 days with my family and doing nothing but focusing on our kiddos and spending time with them, building sand castles,
sitting around the Bon fire, eating every meal together, even all six of us sleeping in a tent together has been so good for us. My sister and her family went camping with us, they recently adopted my nephew who they first met through the hosting program and this was the first year he was here to come camping with us. Getting that time to see how he's adjusting to his new family almost brings me to tears. He is so brave, helpful, positive and has more energy then I could imagine... He is respectful and kind. He isn't perfect and had his moody times (although not as many as my own kids) He misses his friends from where he is from but he likes America. When we were walking on the beach we passed a section that was owned by a private highschool- a boarding school. I told the kids that it was a boarding school and his response was "that's horrible". While I'm pretty sure the ocean front $20k a year boarding school is different than his boarding school he attended his whole life until he moved here, it made my heart break a little and made me so thankful Todd and Amy followed Gods calling for them to adopt this sweet boy.
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiK_tI6vsRMqWiyRMDF8Q6OR5splaMDm57rJ6mVVlEP4zd9T1wHiqktkMBOYIub4aZJkyfMH1p-aLwdQHCe5h-zMthm-p80dulz3uvqVIHGp3PZpucGieeLn4UidKMEznVuxOmeMaYwls3r/s640/blogger-image-2005836255.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; One thing that I want to do while we're there is make "M" affirmation cards. I want to give her one each night before bed- something that tells her how much she is loved and how God created her in his image, tell her that she can Trust in Him. I ordered her John MacArthurs study bible in her language, I would love to have each affirmation supported by a scripture so she can become familiar with her Bible and hopefully she will continue to turn to that source of comfort when she goes back home. So If you have a favorite verse please Facebook it to me and I will find the translation and put it on a card for her!

I have had a few people ask me what else she needs while she's here. I started a list I will post later for those that are interested in helping with that. Thank you all for your love and support. She doesn't know who we are yet or where in the USA she will be spending her summer but she knows she was picked out of over 200 kids to join a family for 6 weeks! We are so excited!

This Friday we are supposed to have all of our hosting fees paid. I am in awe of how God has provided the money needed so far to host "M" this summer. We only need to "sell" 80 more puzzle pieces at $5 each in order to cover our hosting fees. We get weekly statements from New Horizons and each time I get a statement I almost cry over the generosity of people. This has been a very humbling experience. With each sign I take the time to paint I think of how the person that ordered it is helping this sweet girl this summer. I have already been blessed through this process and she's not even here yet! In addition to the puzzle pieces, signs and very generous donations I did school pictures for the preschool and kinder last week and put all of the funds towards our hosting fees. Thank you so much to the generous families who ordered pictures to help support our summer adventure!

So... 80 more pieces ($400) in 5 days! I know this will happen! Will you help? You can donate to me in person, on pay pal, (Marygudgel@hotmail.com) or directly to the New Horizons Website (www.nhfc.org make a donation and add E1076 in the notes to ensure it goes to us). If you would still like to purchase a sign let me know and I can let you know an estimated wait time on that too! Thank you all again for your continued love and support, we couldn't do this without you!
No school, not too many places we need to be, no sports... a break from our busy lives! Summer is comfortable and relaxing and we purposely make it that way - until this summer.

This summer we are choosing to do something totally out of our comfort zone. This summer we are taking a leap of faith and hosting an orphan through New Horizons for Children. Many of you know this is how my sister and her family met their now son Sergejs. They hosted him through this program a few years ago and ended up adopting him. He is such a joy to our family and it has been such a blessing to see God's hand in every part of their story.

We know that we are not going to adopt so we are choosing to host an "aged out" orphan. This is someone who is too old to be adopted, and even if we wanted to, we could not pursue her adoption. We are going to host a teenage girl, for sake of privacy on the blog we will call her "M".

My sister is the volunteer coordinator for our region so of course the idea of hosting has been in the back of my mind since they started releasing photos and bios of kids in orphanages in Eastern Europe. These kids are waiting, hoping, and praying they would be picked to come to the US for the summer. A chance to experience a new country and live as part of a family, maybe for the first time in their lives.

Then a few days ago the thought in the back of my mind moved to the front of my mind. I always thought of hosting a little one and for many reasons I knew that wasn't possible. Then I remembered there were also teens in the program. They know they can't be adopted but they still want the chance to be a part of a family and to experience the love that comes with that. It was all of the sudden so clear. We should host a teenage girl! I got online and started looking through all the children in the program that haven't been chosen yet. I read their bios that tell of their likes and dislikes, I narrowed it down to four young ladies that I thought would be a good fit and then called my sister for more information. She helped me narrow it down to "M". I started thinking about all of the logistics...
Where would she sleep? What would we do all day? How would the kids feel about having a teen in the house? I really couldn't think of one dilemma that didn't have a solution. So then I called Brian at work and told him my grand idea. HAHA oh God is so good. He gave me the perfect husband for me. Brian is wise, he is cautious and he is so good at dealing with all of my grand ideas.

Brian of course expressed all of the same dilemmas I had already sorted through. He came home for lunch that day and we made a pros and cons list. There were way many more pros than cons but he still was not ready to commit. So I gave him another 24 hours. I called him at work again the next day and asked if he had any more thoughts on hosting. He said he wanted me to talk to a dear friend who has three teenage girls to get an idea of what we might be dealing with, so I did. Then I called him back again and shared about our conversation. He then gave me the "OK go for it". He said the only reasons he could think of to not host this young girl were selfish reasons. Things like he would have to share the tv at night with another person, or that the summer wouldn't be as comfortable as it usually is. He said that when you compare those meaningless little things to the opportunity we have to change someone's life, how could we not do it? I love my husband's honest heart and willingness to serve. I am so thankful for him.

So our summer may not be as comfortable as we are used to, but it will be meaningful. Our goal (and the goal of the program) is to teach this girl about LOVE. God's love, the love of a family, and how to love herself. We will do this by showing her unconditional love. Love her when it's hard and when it's easy, when it's exciting and when it's uncomfortable. We are trusting God will show us how to do this and how we can most make a difference in her life.

So what's next?? Well "M" wont be here until late June but a lot has to happen before then. We have completed the hosting application and its time to start paying for the hosting. Hosting costs a lot of money. Some of the costs include her plane ticket, catastrophic health insurance while she is here, paying for her visa, background checks and much more. In addition to making those payments once she gets here we will need a few things. She will come with nothing but the clothes on her back. We will provide her with clothes that she gets to take back with her when she leaves and a rolling duffel bag to take them home in. We will need to get her into a dentist (Our dentist has agreed to cover this! Praise God!) and the eye doctor. The idea of raising this money is my biggest fear in this process but I know God is ABLE. So will you help? I have come up with two fundraisers to help with the cost to bring "M" to our home this summer.

#1. The puzzle fundraiser! I am ordering a puzzle of California that I will give "M". If you would like to help us show love to this girl you can buy a puzzle piece for $5. Once you pay for the puzzle piece I will write your name and any message you want to include onto the back of the puzzle. This is an awesome keepsake for "M"!

#2. Wood Signs. I have posted photos below of three signs I have made specifically to help support hosting costs. Each sign is 8in x 8in. With your donation of $20 ($3 more for shipping) you can pick what sign you want (or customize your own sign with different colors, stain, and wording). Signs are made on a very thin ply wood and are light weight. (Your name will also be added to the puzzle with this donation).
As a lot of you know my sister and her family are in the process of adopting a 12 year old boy from Eastern Europe. In November they got to go and stay in his country for three weeks and then bring him home. Things have been going great but unfortunately this process still has a couple of hurdles to jump through before it's all said and done!

The next obstacle is for my brother in law and my new nephew to travel back to his home country for 6 days March 29th-April 5th. During this time they will meet with the orphan court and verify that "S" is doing well and still wants to be adopted. This will finalize the adoption with his country. This will be trip #2 of 3. While this is exciting because it is ensuring things are moving along just as they should, its a little nerve wracking for them because that means they need to come up with the cost of the travel expenses.

On top of all of that, their family also needs to find a new home to live in by March 31st! The owner of the home they have been living in the past few years needs to use the house for family. They have known it about it for awhile but haven't found a new place to call home quite yet. We have been praying they wouldn't get travel dates for trip #2 until after the move but for some reason God had other plans.

After talking with my sister and her being sure she had drained everyone's well dry with the first half of this adoption process I <strike>forced</strike> encouraged her to do another fund raiser! She came up with a very meaningful way to earn the funds needed for trip two! Here is what she wrote on their adoption page on FB.

"As most of you will remember, we started this journey to bring S to
California with a puzzle fundraiser! S now has that puzzle hanging
in his room as a reminder of all the people who loved, prayed and
supported us in bringing him into our family!

2 years later we
are doing a puzzle fundraiser to raise the funds needed to make our
adoption of S final in his country! We chose the puzzle that S and I
worked on while we were there on trip one! It is of his country and it has 165 pieces! If each piece is claimed for a
price of $20, we will have raised enough to cover the cost of two
international flights, hotel accommodations and food costs for 6
days/nights!
Ok friends... I am writing this post because I want to give anyone and every one this information regarding Molluscum Contagiosum and what worked for us to get rid of them! Please note I am not speaking as a health care professional and assume no legal responsibility for my recommendation but just a mom who figured out how to get rid of Molluscum!

Over a year ago "C" got these little white bumps on the back of his legs... They didn't seem like a big deal but at any given time some of them would be irritated and red so he would itch them. I took him to a P.A. and she told me about Molluscum and said they are very common in kids and that there's not much you can do but they would just go away in a few months. She even had a hand out ready to go with the information on them because they were so common! She also told me they were contagious and would spread but since there's nothing you can do about them (besides freezing them off and that would be incredibly painful and would leave scarring) there was no point in really worrying about them. Eventually they would go away. Here's a close up of some of them... The red one is inflamed and the little white bumps were what they looked like most of the time.

I gave it about a month and saw no change, if anything he had more so I decided I would get him into the dermatologist to see if they had a magic cream or something. I couldn't get into our normal doctor so I made an apt with a PA at another dermatologists office assuming she would maybe have more experience with this pesky virus. She was very helpful and told me that he had eczema, even though his skin wasn't red and didn't look irritated that because of the eczema his skin wasn't able to fight of the Molluscum. Her thought was that if we healed his skin from the eczema then Molluscum would go away. So she gave me a prescription for a body oil to use on his whole body and a cream to put on the areas with the Molluscum. I used these products every night for a few weeks and still nothing...

Throughout that time I had also tried tea trea oil and a face wash for acne that I had read would help. Neither of those things seemed to make a difference at all.

Finally I found a few blogs that recommended using Apple Cider Vinegar! At this point I was willing to try anything. One blog I saw said you should soak a tiny piece of cotton in the ACV and put it on the Molluscum and put a band aide over it for about 6 hours. I tried that on some of them but there were so many it was time consuming and started to irritate his skin. So I tried the advice of another blog and they said ACV baths! I figured at this point I had to give it a shot, nothing else was working and basketball was coming up so he wasn't going to be able to wear pants forever. So we started that and I noticed a difference after a few days... here's what we did..

Every night he would shower and wash his hair etc.. Then once he was all clean I would start the bath. He only had them on his legs so I would fill the bath up just enough to cover his legs with warm water and then pour in about a cup and a half of the ACV. I'm not even talking about expensive ACV from the health food store.. I'm talking about the cheapest stuff in the gallon size from Raley's or Target! $3 a gallon! I wouldn't measure it.. just pour for a few seconds. He would mix it all around and sit in it for about 10 minutes. We wouldn't rinse or anything after, just pat dry. I would put lotion or body oil on his whole body after the bath.

I noticed all of the white bumps started reacting to the ACV. They all turned red and the lotion helped him not to itch them. With all of the Molluscum reacting to the ACV at the same time it was a little bit alarming because it looked so bad. I just kept it up because I knew this was part of the process to them dying. Finally after about a month they are gone! We did a ACV bath every single night for about three weeks. I still do them about two times a week to make sure there aren't any hiding and also to prevent any new ones from coming. I am so happy to finally have this behind us and to know of a solution that will work if any of my other kiddos get it!

Here are a few more tips I have to keep Molluscum from spreading*
-Wash your hand with antibacterial after treating the Mollusucm
-Try as hard as possible not to touch or itch the Molluscum... The contagious part is in the white bump and if breaks open that is what will make it spread.
-Never re wear clothing that has touched the Mollusucm. We wash EVERYTHING after wearing it once to make sure its not spreading.
-My son had it on his legs so after the ACV bath and lotion he was only allowed to wear pajama pants to bed. No shorts.
-Use towels only once and no sharing! When you have lots of little ones it's easy to line them all up after bath and pat them down before getting them dressed but this is a sure way to spread the Molluscum! Whatever towel I used for my son I would make sure and take it straight to the washer. More laundry for awhile but it is so worth it!
-Gummy Vitamins with Vitamin C boost to help his immune system fight of the virus from the inside

*I've read that the virus can't live on clothing etc but it was still worth it to me to be extra careful not to give it any chance of spreading.

I was too embarrassed to talk about the Molluscum with anyone but once they started to clear up I started talking about it and realized A LOT of people I talked to had kids with it or knew someone that did! I hope this blog will find them and they can get rid of them like we did! MGudgelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05862865828432166100noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1275671159355737181.post-51976570078907131142015-02-01T21:13:00.000-08:002015-02-01T21:13:22.779-08:00Gudgels Do Disney Part 1- Shoes and EarsWe have been planning a trip to Disneyland for about six months. As our trip has gotten closer I find myself doing a lot of <strike>un</strike>necessary planning for our adventure. I love crafting so give me an excuse and I'm going to run with it! I will blame this one on my sister in love- Katie. For Christmas this year we did "family" gifts with Brian's siblings. For our family gift Katie got us matching Disneyland shirts (I will share those in a later post). Of course I had to start thinking about what K & T would wear with their personalized Minnie shirts and all of the sudden I was in craft mode. That combined with Brian telling me the girls probably should have some tennis shoes for comfortable <strike>walking</strike> riding in the stroller I knew it was time to get my craft on. So here is post one of our Disney adventures... Disney shoes and Disney ears for our girlies.
I decided it would be easier for me to make a video of me blinging out the shoes and making the ears rather than showing each step in pictures.. It's a little long so just scan through to the parts you have questions about. I gave a lot of details... I also say "and" a lot. Happy crafting!

My sister and her family are adopting a boy from Eastern Europe!

They hosted him over Christmas break for a month through an organization called New Horizons for Children. Even before he arrived they knew adoption was a very likely outcome for this little boy into our family. Once he was here that just solidified their decision even more. He is such an amazing little boy and we are so excited for him to join our family. Or like he says, "Summer I come to California for life". As most of you know adoption is very expensive and often times seems nearly impossible! By participating in this giveaway you can have a chance to win one of these bracelets!
My very first stitch fix! I was on the list for awhile but due to that whole target debit card mis hap and me getting a new debit card and me not updating my stitch fix account I missed out on the box they put together for me a month ago.. But I got back in line and my turn is finally here. I got my box!
For those of you who don't know... Stitch Fix is basically a busy mom's dream come true. You go online and fill out a little bit about what you like fashion wise, tell them your sizes and where you wear the clothes you buy and then they give all that info to a stylist and they put together a box for you. They ship it to your home, you try it all on, keep what you want and send back what you do not like. I love this! It's like speed shopping and you can get the boxes once a month! Or you can schedule your shipments more spaced out if you'd like. They charge you a $20 styling fee when they ship your fix but that $20 will go towards your purchase assuming you keep something. I love shopping but at this point in my life never make it to the mall, and when I do I have no idea what to try on since I feel like i've been out of the fashion world for so long! So I was beyond excited to get this box today.... Here is what it had..

Well out of the five items they sent me this month i'm only keeping one. I have heard the more fixes you get the better the selection gets because your stylist learns your likes and dislikes. I will go on the website and "check out" and write why i'm not keeping the things i'm sending back. An extra bonus, if they ever do send you a box of things you LOVE you get a 25% discount if you buy everything. That makes a big difference.
Stitch Fix is definity a treat and not something I HAVE to do but I will definitely be trying to fit this into our regular budget. It's exciting to get this box in the mail and try on things that were picked especially for you! IF you want to try it out I would appreciate it if you signed up under this link so I could earn credit towards my next fix! Thanks
Tenley is here! So I know i'm really bad about blogging on our family blog.. maybe that will change.. probably not. Either way... one of the reasons I do this blog is because you can turn your blog into a book. Did you know that? So once I get enough posts I can have it printed and just like that it's like a mini journal. I'll have to go back and add bunch for it be a more accurate picture of our life.. but for now I'll blog about our latest addition. Our sweet baby girl Tenley Sandra.

I had been praying that God would let me have Tenley as soon as she was healthy enough to be born without any complications. I was so tired and my body was tired and feeling the strain of being pregnant for the fourth time in 5 years. So that was my prayer for about two weeks before Tenley made her appearance. Of course I prayed that but wasn't exactly planning on it happening. My scheduled c-section was already planned a week before my due date. So what were the odds that I would actually go into labor on my own before then? Well.... at exactly 36 weeks I went into labor. I had more envisioned something simple like my water breaking, me going to the hospital and then them quickly giving me a c-section.. The reality? Not even close.

I started having contractions at about 10:30pm... I was very doubtful they were the real deal so decided I would go to bed and was sure they would go away. At about 2am I still hadn't been able to sleep through them at all and they were about 5 minutes apart, so we decided we should probably go in. Of course because I was only 36 weeks they wanted to stop the contractions and hold me off for another week or two to be safe. I was ok with that, I just wanted the contractions to stop. I also had a very high heart rate the whole time I was there. it ranged from 109-140. At one point, for about 5 min my heart rate got up to 170. They ordered an emergency EKG and had a cardiologist read it but everything looked fine... they thought maybe I was having an anxiety attack? One nurse came in and saw two heart rates on my strip at 140 and assumed I was having twins... That heart rate was normal for the baby... not so much for me... so two so close together she thought it must be twins. I think that got Brian's heart rate up! So at about 12pm my doctor came in, quickly looked at the monitor and said, "We're going to take the baby, your contractions aren't stopping. Let me see at what time we can do it today" I felt such a sigh of relief, I wasn't supposed to have contractions! I have planned c-sections.. not contractions! Then I immediately realized how early I was and what that could mean for Tenley. I knew she would eventually be ok but there was a very good chance she would have to go straight to the NICU and possibly stay there for a few days. So then of course I started to worry a little bit... and cry a little bit... but either way I knew my body was DONE! I was in so much pain at that point so it was mostly a feeling of relief. The doctor came back and said 45 minutes! Brian had just gone to the car to get our camera because the battery needed to be charged... so I called him and told him and the rest of our family and we started prepping for surgery.

So oddly enough the only thing I ever really dread about the actual c-section is getting my spinal tap. I love everything else about the surgery. (I know i'm so weird, but I would seriously watch it if they'd let me... they never did lol) I was especially nervous because I hadn't heard anything about the anesthesiologist I was going to have. In fact I ended up having a different one for each baby. I hadn't had any complications with the others so I was really hoping it would be the same. The lady I had this time was amazing. I don't remember her name, it started with a V, but she was good. It was definitely uncomfortable getting my spinal tap but it never really hurt for more than 3 seconds. Seriously incredible. Even after my back would usually get sore in the area that they put the needle.. not this time! She was great. So they're giving me the spinal tap and my legs start to get all warm and I told my nurse and the anesthesiologist that I loved that feeling.. they thought I was crazy! So your body gets warm from the chest down and then all of the sudden its like weight free... It's relaxing to me. lol I know i'm crazy.. Ok so then after that happens I just keep reminding them Brian still needs to come in.. once he's in there I really can just relax. I like to talk to the doctors and ask them random questions and they always seem pretty surprised that I even care at that point. I asked how my uterus looked... they actually said they were shocked because it looked like I had only had two c-sections when in fact this was my fourth! (They look at the scar tissue) I asked why some people say when they've had c-sections they thought the doctor took out some of their organs and put them on their chest?!? That had never happened to me... the doctors explained that some surgeons do it that way but that mine didn't. I was thankful. He's the best in my opinion. Then it came time for them to take Tenley out. She was breach so I didn't know if this would make a difference or not from the others... it didn't. The only difference was they confirmed she was a girl before she was even all the way out. lol So immediately my question was, "Is she tiny???" They said she was actually a pretty decent size for being so early. That made me happy. Then as soon as she was out I heard her LOUD cry! That also made me happy! They had the NICU on standby just in case but we didn't end up needing them at all. They wiped her off a little, wrapped her up and gave her to me to hold for a bit before they gave her a bath. While the doctors finished my surgery, tied my tubes, and closed me up I just laid there totally peaceful, thankful, and happy. (Yes I said tied my tubes! 4 babies from my body is enough! If we feel like God want's us to have more one day we will definitely adopt, but I knew my body was done). The rest of the hospital stay was great and the biggest issue we had with Tenley was getting her to poop! God had his hand on me and Tenley through all of this and we are so thankful.

Now for the fun part.. the pictures... there are some from surgery so I made them black and white so they wouldn't be as gross. I love them though!
Unfortunately we couldn't send one to everyone so If you didn't get it in the mail here is the digital version. =)

Happy Spring! We decided to not send Christmas cards this year since we had so much going on between then and now. So know that you were not forgotten! We just wanted to wait until Spring to send out our yearly update. So here it is!

Since the first of the year a lot has happened for our family. We sold our house in Atwater and moved to Merced. With Brian and I both working in Merced every day we were facing the realization quickly that we were wasting a lot of time driving and a lot of money on gas. So for now we are happily renting a beautiful home less than 5 minutes away from where each of us work. We also now have a pool to enjoy this summer and added an extra bedroom! This definitely comes in handy because we added another member to our family! Our first baby girl, Kayley Bernice, arrived on March 9th 2012!

Brian is still working for UBS Financial Services and is enjoying his job. He’s started teaching the freshman and sophomore Sunday school class at our church on Sundays and is enjoying spending time preparing for his lessons and ministering to the class. Our desire to do foster care has developed into something a little different but just as rewarding. We helped get the Safe Families ministry started at our church and are currently serving as the ministry leads. It is an incredible ministry and we are learning a lot about how to show God’s love and grace to others. Camden and Andersen absolutely adore Brian and want his attention every minute he is home. He’s hoping to get a stand up paddle board soon so he can have a water activity to enjoy here in the Valley. It’s not quite as good as living near the ocean like he did growing up, but it will do for now.

Mary- I am currently on maternity leave and I am enjoying being home. When I go back to school in a few weeks I will only have about a month and a half left of being a preschool teacher. Next year I will take over the position of administrator for the preschool as my sister is moving to Redding in June. I am looking forward to this role at the preschool, but I’m not looking forward to my sister and her family moving four hours north. I know it is what’s best for their family, and at least now we have a beautiful place to visit often. We already have monthly reunions scheduled through October. After Christmas, I took a long break from photography. I’m looking forward to getting started again in May for family and friends. I am loving this stage in my life… Something I always wanted was to be married and have a family, so I guess you could say I feel like we are living the dream, my heart is full!

Camden will be four in May! He has turned out to be quite a social little boy. He loves preschool and can identify all of his letters and sounds. He has also mastered electronics and it’s absolutely shocking how good he is on the Xbox. His favorite games are the Lego games, the newest addition to his collection is Lego Star Wars. He would play all day if we let him so we had to come up with a “crystal” system. He has these little marble-like crystal jewels that he has to spend in order to buy minutes and he can only spend so many at a time. So far it works great! He also loves riding his bike outside and he cannot wait for it to be warm enough to start swimming. He gets to start playing Soccer in the fall on an under 6 team and Brian is hoping to coach. It’s been especially neat to see him and Andersen start playing together more.

Andersen is just about 2 and a half years old. He talks more and more every day. He isn’t nearly as outgoing as Camden, much more reserved. He loves his puzzles, cars and trains and gets his fair share on the iPad and Mobigo. He is such a bright little boy and can count into the teens (not always in order) He also loves playing outside, rain or shine, and he asks us multiple times a day to go out. He’s recently become attached to whatever shirt he is wearing for the day and gets so upset when we change him into anything different. He’s a funny little guy and adds so much to our family. It took him a week or so but he is finally warming up to baby Kayley. He walks around saying “baby baby baby” and smiles when he sees her for the first time each day. He’s even given her a handful of kisses!

Kayley is 10 days old now. It’s already proved to be so fun having a girl! I’m loving all the things that come along with that; pink clothes, bows, tutus… now she just has to grow a little bit so she can fit into all those things! She’s a champ at nursing and has blessed us with much sleep at night. I’m excited to watch her grow and to see what kind of personality she will have.

Well, that’s our yearly update in a few paragraphs. We hope everyone is having a great year so far. To get more regular updates on our family visit our family blog or find us on facebook. (Need to think of a new name for this blog.. any suggestions?) Moving on..

Kayley was originally Scheduled to arrive today, March 13th 2012 via c-section. However due to an opening in the doctors schedule her arrival date was moved forward a few days. On Friday, March 9th 2012 at 8:24am our little girl Kayley Bernice was brought into the world. She came out and quickly showed us how strong her little lungs were. Nothing quite beats those first cries you hear, it makes me tear up every time.

She weighed 6 lbs 9oz and measured 19 3/4 inches long... now for the fun part, PICTURES! (I made the delivery and post op pics in black and white since there are a few pics of her straight out of my tummy, makes them a little less gross. So if you think that will be too much for you to handle get ready to scroll down a little quick through those, I however am amazed by them!)

Getting ready to go into surgery

So blessed to have both sets of parents there to pray with us before.

And she's born! With Christmas only a week away I hope you and your families are doing well and are ready to relax and take in this special Holiday. For our little family that is exactly what's happening over the next week. Or at least I'm going to try and have that be the case!

Sooo where do I start? I guess first I should say we are working on a timeline that revolves around March 13, 2012. That will be when our little girl, Kayley Bernice, comes into this world! Or at least that's when we have the c-section scheduled. We are beyond thrilled to be having a girl and can't wait to meet her! Although, a lot is going to happen before then.

Once we get through Christmas we will be in full "packing and moving" mode. That's right we are moving! (Don't worry too much local friends, we are not moving far) Long story short we are selling our house and moving from Atwater to Merced. We are very excited about the house the Lord has provided for us and are especially excited to being only 5 minutes from both the church and Brian's work. We will be saving lots of money on gas with this big move and for that reason alone we are thrilled. We will be all moved into the new house in February, just one month before our new addition arrives.

So other than those few huge changes most everything is the same for our little family.

We are still certified to do foster care although we have shifted our role a little bit for now. We started the Safe Families ministry at our church and are anxiously waiting to see how God is going to use everyone involved. This is a ministry similar to foster care, but it offers support to parents that need help and allows them to take control and make changes before CPS has to get involved. To read more about this ministry you can click here: Safe Families

Brian has been with UBS Financial Services for five years now and still enjoying it. Recently he has been co-teaching the Freshman and Sophomore high school group on Sunday mornings. Brian's parents and sister are living in the bay area and we get to see them almost every month. We are very spoiled to have them so close and the boys absolutely love every minute they get to spend with them. Brian's brother, Brent, and his wife Danielle, recently moved to Austin, Texas. They are enjoying the south and we hope to visit their new stomping grounds sometime soon. We are blessed we will be able to see them in about a week as we will all be at Brian's parents house for Christmas this year!

I am in the middle of my third year teaching at SonShine Christian Preschool at First Baptist Church in Merced. This school year has been wonderful and I am so thankful for my students and their wonderful parents! I am also very thankful for my co-workers. It's so nice working with people you really look forward to being around! Photography is also keeping me busy, however I am done with photo shoots until after Kayley is born. As if I couldn't have a more full plate I added one more thing about a month ago. I now am an Independent Scentsy consultant. Really this isn't much work at all. It just gives me an excuse to shop online. I love doing it, and the little bit of extra income has been nice. My family is still living in Merced and we get to see them pretty much every day. There is definitely something special about the boys being able to go to Papa's office regularly and scoring some "gummy fish" from his top drawer.

Camden is now 3 1/2 years old and often I have to remind myself he's only that! He started preschool three days a week this year and is enjoying it. He especially enjoys being at school with his cousin Kara. He is constantly impressing us with how smart he is and makes us smile with all of the things he says. He is very excited to be having a baby sister, although he often tells us we need to have more babies after baby Kayley is born because he wants our family to be "just a little bit bigger."

Andersen turned two in November and his personality is really starting to shine. He is very deliberate in just about everything he does. He especially loves spending time with his daddy and is often found grasping Brian's hand and leading him from the movie cabinet to the playroom and anywhere else he wants to be. He loves Cars 2 and has much commentary for just about the whole movie. Although only parts of what he is saying we can understand. I try and tell him baby Kayley is in my tummy but he just looks at me like I am crazy. It will be interesting to see how he adjusts to our new addition.

We will try and update our blog more regularly and we look forward to introducing you to Kayley in a few short months! Merry Christmas!

Much Love,
The GudgelsMGudgelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05862865828432166100noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1275671159355737181.post-7542888617093197442011-10-25T22:26:00.000-07:002011-10-25T22:51:42.320-07:00Pumpkins!This was our third year going to this pumpkin patch, and each time, what I remember most is the heat! You'd think by the third year I'd expect it to be hot... but for some reason I just associate pumpkins with fall and fall with cool weather.. hmm not in the central valley! We had a great time this time with just our little family. The boys loved running and getting all sweaty. They especially loved picking the pumpkins they were going to get to carve. It was fun that Cam actually understood that if we were going to make a "pumpkin family" we had to take the size of the pumpkins into consideration. We started with baby K's pumpkin, obviously that one would be the smallest, and worked our way up from there. He is such a smart little guy, he got it, no problem!

Running through the pumpkin patch and sun flowers

Ander peaking out of the teepee

My 3 handsome men!

I kept trying to have the boys take a picture with the sunflowers but I kid you not, every single one had a few of these creatures in the middle of them.. When I was little I told my first grade class that halloween was the devils birthday... Opposite of Christmas right? haha Well, our kids are going to relate pumpkin carving to Matthew 5:16 "Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds, and praise your father in heaven." I was quick to fill my boards with projects I wanted to do. Brian asked me when I planned on doing all of these things and my first response was, "Christmas Break". To our surprise I've already finished two of my "pins" only a few days later. All it took was a free Friday night and a quick visit to the new Hobby Lobby in town.

The first project I did was a scarf organizer. It was supposed to be way cooler than it was. Pretty much I thought I would be able to roll my scarfs and tuck them in shower curtain rings laced together and hanging from a hanger. It all was going great until it came time to roll the scarfs and I realized, no matter how hard I tried, there was no way I was going to get my scarfs to fit into that small of a circle. So instead I draped my scarfs through the holes and let them hang. It works well and still is a great way to organize my scarfs but its not nearly as "neat" as what I was hoping for.

This is what I was thinking it was going to be able to do...

This is what I made that was supposed to be able to let me store my scarfs like the above...

Only one of my 13 scarfs actually fit through the hole the way I was wanting it to. I made a jewelry organizer and I love it! Before I had all of my jewelry in one of those hanging organizers with pockets. It worked well but It was hard to remember what I had because it always got stuffed back in pockets and I had to double up on pockets in order to fit everything. Camden started preschool! This is my third year teaching preschool and I love it. Camden will have half day preschool for two years before he starts kinder so for now I'm only sending him Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. It was so fun having him with me today. I loved my job already, but I will say its even more special for me that my little guy gets to be a part of the program.

I can't believe we've been married for that long. It seems like we were just dating at APU... but at the same time it's hard to remember my life without him. I am so thankful to have such a wonderful husband. We had a great trip. It started with a walk down memory lane...

Where it all began.
We had a wonderful trip and I can't wait to go back there sometime. Some of you may be wondering what happened to wanting to do foster care??? Well we are still very much involved and wanting to help children in need.

Before we got pregnant we were approached by our foster care agency about a new (or new to our area) program called Safe Families. It's a program that helps families in crisis. They help families before CPS needs to get involved. An example may be a mom that needs to go to rehab but has no support system to help with her kids while she is in the program. Safe Families can help that mom find a safe family home that would be willing to take her kids while she was getting the help she needs.

For now this program seems to be a perfect fit for our family. The average length of care needed is 6 weeks. We need something short term. I like it because its a program that also supports the parents. They are working with parents that want to do better for their family but just need help.

The biggest hurdle we are facing at the time is getting started. In order to be a part of Safe Families you need to go to a church that has a Safe Families ministry. There are non in the central valley, but hopefully that will change soon.

The director of the private foster care agency we have been going through is trying to get Safe Families in our area. He has quite a few churches going through training in the Sacramento area. All it takes is a few families in the church that want to help. There are different roles that need to be covered. Here are the roles from what I know so far.

Host Families: Families willing to take in children. Requires training and fingerprinting.

Family Coach: Requires training (and I think finger printing). Helps the host families by supporting them. Works on building relationships with parents and getting them involved so when they are ready to have their children back they will continue to have a support system.

Family Friends: Requires no training but will be given a guide on how to help. Their roll is to simply encourage the host families and help them when needed. Being involved in such an awesome church with great people we already have this. We would just need some of those families to become official "family friends".

Another cool thing, Merced County knows Koinonia is trying to bring this program to Merced and they are all for it! They know that if parents can get help before they have to intervene it can be a huge help to everyone.

So if you go to FBC Merced and this sounds interesting to you let me know! In order to make this work we need at least one family in every role that wants to help. disclaimer: we are pending elder board approval to get this ministry going, but we know if it's God's will for our church to take this on it wont be a problem. Once (or maybe I should say if) the Elders say we can go for it we will announce a meeting that will give more info on the program. It usually takes about 4 to 6 weeks to have a Safe Families program up and running so hopefully we can do that soon. We have already been approached about a family that will need our help from December-March. I really hope we can make a difference to this mom and be ready to help her in her time of crisis.

If you don't go to FBC Merced but still want to get involved, look on the the Safe Families website to see if there is a church in your area that does Safe Families.

Here is the website.
http://www.safe-families.org/default.aspx

So what if FBC Merced isn't willing to take on the Safe Families ministry? Then I think our next step will be to try and do emergency foster care. Again short term. Our agency is currently trying to see if Merced is need of emergency foster care homes.

Our campgrounds were up on the hill, just a short walk down to the beach. Perfect camping in my mind. The only downside to this trip was Brian wasn't able to come with us. (We can't all be teachers and get summers off) We went with my parents, my sister and her family, and my brother and his gf. We are thinking this needs to become a Hicks family tradition.

The two youngest cousins relaxing while we set up camp

<td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;
